Bad Religion was formed in 1979 by high school friends Greg Graffin and Brett Gurewitz. They played their first show in 1980 as the opening act for Social Distortion and signed with Epitaph Records in 1981. They released their debut album, How Could Hell Be Any Worse?, in 1981 and spent the rest of the '80s touring and recording hit music. Graffin also managed to obtain a PhD from Cornell University during the band's nascent.
They hit the big time with their 1993 album, Recipe for Hate, which was their seventh album, but first to make an impact on the charts. Since then, Bad Religion perennially puts out records that satisfy punk's harshest critics.
