A Chorus Line is a story about seventeen experienced, professional dancers, all struggling just to gain a part in the background as chorus members. The director, Zach, puts the dancers through an unorthodox audition process by asking them about their lives and what led them to dance. Through these introductions, the audience learns about how the dancers have struggled not only professionally, but personally. Sheila, Bebe, and Maggie all pursued dance as a means to escape miserable family lives, while Paul and Greg discuss the discovery of their homosexuality and how they dealt with the pressures of society. Veteran dancer Cassie is approached by Zach -- as they had a previous relationship -- and discusses why such a talented, accomplished dancer would audition for the chorus. Cassie explains that, although she hasn't been able to find solo work, the passion for dance still burns brightly inside her. However, when Paul is rushed to the hospital after injuring his knee, all of the dancers realize that they are simply trying to dance as much as possible before their time runs out.
