Local Artists’ Works Honor Arizona’s Vintage Sign History Throughout April

The FOUND:RE Phoenix, located at 1100 North Central Avenue, launches its latest art gallery exhibit in collaboration with downtown’s popular First Friday art walk on April 6. The exhibit, titled “Neon AZ,” features Marshall Shore (otherwise known as the Hip Historian) and works from photographer Caprice White of Jet Set Imagery that pays homage to the iconic neon signage, which plays a part of Arizona and the Southwest’s history.

As part of the Arizona Vintage Sign Coalition, Marshall Shore is excited about documenting, preserving, and sharing a passion for neon. He says, “Neon tells a story about a specific period of time. Its heyday was a boom time in the Southwest and Arizona, and neon tubes are like thread in that they create a fabric for daily lives. Iconic signs that we pass by that anchor us to our past and where we came from.”

Caprice White has a shared passion for historical vintage neon and the preservation of mid-century art and architecture. In her inaugural exhibit at the FOUND:RE she shares her love affair with the state of Arizona and its beautiful and historical vintage neon. She says, “The abundance of neon in Arizona is something that I think needs to be recognized, cherished and preserved as historical art.”

The exhibit kicks off Friday April 6, 2018 with an opening night artists’ reception from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The exhibit will be on display at the FOUND:RE through April 30.

Michael Oleskow, the FOUND:RE’s cultural curator, adds, “We are continually seeking out relevant, interesting and one-of-a-kind art to display at the FOUND:RE and we are thrilled to include Marshall and Caprice in this homage to Arizona’s neon sign history.”

The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and by checking availability at the front desk on weekends.
